PROJECT PROFILE: International Spy Museum
Location
Washington, DC
Description
The International Spy Museum incorporates several historic buildings on each facade, each of which retained its significant architectural features on the exterior. The interior spaces are designed to promote a flow of visitors through the exhibits and gift shop. Across the street from the National Portrait Gallery, the Spy Museum remains one of the city’s popular tourist attractions.
Scope of Project
Terra Cotta Roof Tiles:
- The roof tiles were removed, cleaned and stored.
- Once the roof structure was secured, WEI reinstalled the tiles and replaced damaged ones as necessary.
Exterior Walls:
- To begin the envelope restoration, WEI stripped over 15,000 sf of masonry coating, and cleaned the materials underneath.
- The deteriorated mortar joints in the brick, stone and terra cotta units were cut out and repointed.
- All the steel lintels were replaced for structural integrity.
- Several of the facades, or portions of them, were recoated with a high-performance coating system.
Windows and Details:
- Over 100 wood window frames and their sashes were stripped of old coatings, repaired and recoated.
- Each unique cornice was stripped, repaired as necessary, and recoated.
- Our mill shop and carpenters fabricated and installed over 500 linear feet of wood and glass storefronts to replicate the deteriorated originals.
