PROJECT PROFILE:
American Red Cross Headquarters
Location
Washington, DC
Description
In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson laid the cornerstone for the permanent Red Cross Headquarters on 17th Street, near the White House. The Headquarters Building interior features oak millwork, a monumental marble staircase, and Tiffany stained glass windows that commemorate heroic women of the Civil War. A second structure was built between 1928 and 1930 on the Red Cross headquarters campus block. The 1928 building facing E Street was built for the local DC Red Cross chapter and as a memorial for women who served the wounded in World War I. Before being converted to additional national administrative offices, the building housed the Red Cross Museum. Both structures are a classical Ecoles Des Beaux-arts style in Vermont white marble and were designed by the New York architectural firm Breck Trowbridge and Goodhue Livingstone.
WEI was hired to perform interior and exterior restoration work on both the Headquarters Building and the former Red Cross Museum. The scope of work in the headquarters building involved refinishing the oak millwork, doors, frames that were damaged by a caustic paint stripper. Work in the second building included: installation of new windows, restoration of the Great Hall of Service ballroom, and exterior masonry cleaning.
