Description
The American Bar Association headquarters was built as the Union Trust building in 1907. It was designed by the well-known Washington DC architectural firm Wood, Donn & Deming. This post classical building is clad in granite with fenestration highlighted with ornate detail in pressed metal and iron grill work. The firm was noted for its ability to use classical design to inspire and punctuate modern design. The Union Trust Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, along with four other buildings designed by Wood, Donn & Deming; Carnegie Geophysical Institute 2801 Upton St, NW (now the Levine School of Music), Tucker & Myers House 2310-2320 S St, NW, Masonic Temple 801 13th St, NW, (now the National Museum for Women in the Arts) and the Bachelor Apartment House 1737 H St, NW.
Scope of Project
Exterior Masonry:
- Clean all granite and limestone masonry
- Replace existing iron pins and cramps with stainless steel at granite baluster at 10th floor
- Patch granite elements with matching colored mortar
- Cut out and repoint damaged mortar joints
- Patch exposed aggregate precast concrete
- Remove existing post and wire bird deterrent system
Metals and wood:
- Restore wood double hung windows
- Strip, repair, prime, and paint decorative pressed metal between 4th and 8th floors
- Provide scaffolding to access entire façade on H and 15th streets
- Strip, prime, and recoat monumental iron bars, windows, and doors at ground floor
